Questions - Comments - Feedback

The Burlington Beat began in June of 2017 and aims to be a small concentrated sample of the creativity that exists in every corner of our beautiful city, Burlington, VT. There are those who have made their art their living, others who treat it as a hobby--some who have been honing their skills for years and others just starting out. You'll find all of that here.

If you have an idea of how you'd like to help with future issues, let us know in the box to the left!

Submission Guidelines

Check out the Beatza! What is a Beatza? Find out here .

Submission deadline: August 20, 2019.

All work must be previously unpublished, either in print or online. Simultaneous submissions are a-okay with us, but please let us know right away if your work is accepted elsewhere.

We're looking for shorter works (less than two pages), but are open to reading just about anything from the most traditional to the strange and experimental. Anything celebrating life in our city is highly sought after. Please send no more than 3 poems in a MS Word compatible document.

Both fiction & non fall under this category. We're looking for anything--short stories, essays, op-eds--especially if it is Burlington-specific. Please send no more than 1 piece of prose. There is no page limit, but the longer the work, the higher standard to which it will be held. MS Word compatible would be most appreciated.

Anything visual. Send up to 5 pieces in jpeg format for consideration.

Have something that doesn’t fall under the above categories? We’re intrigued. Send it along! But please don’t send more than 5 of whatever it is you’ve got.

There is no theme for summer 2019. Instead, all submissions will be considered as regular submissions. Submitting to the theme is 100% optional, but also fun. The fall 2018 theme was Stranger. If you choose to submit to it, then, if accepted, it will be featured on our theme page. Check it out an as example. Only six people's work will be accepted to each theme. However; work submitted to the theme that isn't accepted will then be considered as a regular submission.

Email us at with the following:

In the subject line, please put the category of the pieces you are submitting. Either poetry, prose, art, or other.

In the body of the email, please just provide your name as you would like it to appear, a brief bio that you'd like to appear with your work, and any links to social media you might want to include. One to three sentences should suffice. Please specify if you are submitting to our current theme.

Please attach your writing in one document (please no PDFs). Visual pieces should be sent as separate attachments. Please avoid names or identifiers on your work, as we would like to assess it blindly.

Expect a response within one month. If you haven’t received one by that time, feel free to contact us again to check in.

We look forward to reviewing your work and thank you for sharing!
